@artnews In the middle of Art Basel Unlimited is an intriguing office-like space where no-one seemed to dare enter at first. A half-hour after the VIP opening of the sector, however, the space was full of crouching people taking pictures of a female gorilla hidden under a desk. “It’s alive!” one young man said, noticing that the gorilla was moving. Fortunately, it was just an animatronic sculpture by Ryan Gander, but still, with its low-pitched groan and its wiggling fingers and toes, this animal seems oddly realistic. She’s named Brenda, and per a description for this work, she is learning how to count, a skill she needs to work her job and serve capitalism. The installation, titled "School of Languages" (2023), supposedly contains a fan that blows “a faint scent of damp and urine.” Check the link in our bio to learn more about some of the best and most impressive works on view in Art Basel’s Unlimited section. #ARTnews #ArtBasel #ArtBaselUnlimited #Basel #RyanGander ♬ original sound - ARTnews

@artnews Over an intense nine weeks in the summer of 1905 in the modest fishing village of Collioure on the French Mediterranean, Henri Matisse and Andre Derain embarked on a partnership that led to a wholly new, radical artistic language later known as Fauvism. This exhibition, which is co-organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, emphasizes as never before the legacy of that summer and examines the paintings, drawings, and watercolors of Matisse and Derain through sixty-five works on loan from national and international museums. Exhibition Mentioned: "Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism" 📍: The Met Fifth Avenue 📆: Through 21 January 2024 #ARTnews #ARTnewsVideo #HenriMatisse #Matisse #AndreDerain #Derain #Fauvism #PostImpressionism #TheMet #MetMuseum #Collioure #Mediterranean #SalondAutomne ♬ Cabin Music - Rick James
@artnews For the first time ever, the 2023 iteration of MoMA's celebrated "New Photography" series has a geographic purview. All seven photographers—Kelani Abass, Akinbode Akinbiyi, Yagazie Emezi, Amanda Iheme, Abraham Oghobase, Karl Ohiri, and Logo Oluwamuyiwa—have ties to the Nigerian city of Lagos, otherwise known to Yoruba speakers as Èkó. That alone would make it notable, since MoMA has rarely given African art, and in particular African photography, the spotlight. But the art itself matches the ambitions of the show’s curator, Oluremi C. Onabanjo, who is challenging what it really means for photography to document a city, let alone the people who reside in it. Check the link in our bio to read Alex Greenberger's full review of the show. Exhibition Mentioned: MoMA New Photography 2023 📍: Museum of Modern Art [11 WEST 53 STREET, MANHATTAN] 📆: 28 May - 17 September 2023 #ARTnews #ARTnewsVideo #NewPhoto2022 #MoMANewPhoto2023 #MoMA #MuseumofModernArt #Kelani#Abass #AkinbodeAkinbiyi #YagazieEmezi #AmandaIheme #AbrahamOghobase #KarlOhiri #LogoOluwamuyiwa #OluremiCOnabanjo #AlexGreenberger ♬ Rema charm sped up - The.kid.Dnk 🎧
